A century ago, the materials that were utilized for kitchen counter tops were a totally different ball game from what is being used now. Throughout my remodeling career I have torn out many old counter top from homes that were made within the early 1900's and the original nailed down counter top was still in place. I have seen tops that had several layers of vinyl and then someone had installed a laminate, like Formica, on top of the layers of vinyl. Each new homeowner had added the newest and finest product that had been made for kitchen counter tops.
Right now it is almost work just to keep up with all the new and or recycled products that are being used to manufacture counter tops, especially since the GREEN PRODUCTS movement has really started to pick up steam. Not only are manufacturers utilizing recycled glass but they are now using recycled paper and cardboard. You can buy composite materials made from quartz crystals or recycled glass that are impervious to almost anything and everything and lovely on top of that. You still have the long time favourite butcher block, that is being made with some of the most exotic woods you can find. You can find solid surface materials that run the gamut from solid colors to marble like patterns. The long time regular, plastic laminate, has new face lifts, new textured feel and look.
